in nghĩa là vào trong một căn phòng, toà nhà, chiếc xe…; out nghĩa là ra khỏi chúng. Hai từ này đi sau nhiều động từ chỉ chuyển động (get in / out, go in / out, come in, walk in, move in / out, let somebody in / out, break in). Bên cạnh đó có những cụm mang nghĩa riêng: drop in, join in, plug in, take somebody in, fill in; eat out, drop out, get out of, leave out, cross out.

Cụm động từ với in và out

in = vào trong ⇄ out = ra ngoài

in = vào trong phòng, toà nhà, xe…: How did the thieves get in? Here’s a key, so you can let yourself in. Lisa walked up to the edge of the pool and dived in. I’ve got a new apartment. I’m moving in on Friday. As soon as I got to the airport, I checked in. out = ra khỏi phòng, toà nhà, xe…: Stay in the car. Don’t get out. I had no key, so I was locked out. She swam up and down the pool, and then climbed out. Andy opened the window and looked out. We paid the hotel bill and checked out. in ⇄ into; out ⇄ out of

in và out đứng một mình, sau chúng không có danh từ. Khi có danh từ theo sau thì dùng into và out of: I’m moving in on Friday. ⇄ I’m moving into my new flat on Friday. She climbed out. ⇄ She climbed out of the pool.

• I’m moving in on Friday. / I’m moving into my new flat on Friday. — Thứ Sáu tôi dọn vào. / Thứ Sáu tôi dọn vào căn hộ mới.
• She climbed out. / She climbed out of the pool. — Cô ấy trèo lên. / Cô ấy trèo ra khỏi hồ bơi.

drop in; join in; plug in; take somebody in; fill in / fill out

drop in = ghé thăm ai mà không hẹn trước: I dropped in to see Chris on my way home. join in = tham gia vào việc đang diễn ra: They were playing cards, so I joined in. plug in = cắm điện (đại từ chen giữa: plug it in): The fridge isn’t working because you haven’t plugged it in. take somebody in = lừa ai (thường dùng bị động): The man said he was a policeman and I believed him. I was completely taken in. fill in hoặc fill out a form = điền thông tin vào mẫu: Please fill in the application form and send it to us by 28 February. (hoặc Please fill out the application form…)

• I dropped in to see Chris on my way home. — Trên đường về, tôi ghé thăm Chris.
• The fridge isn’t working because you haven’t plugged it in. — Tủ lạnh không chạy vì bạn chưa cắm điện.
• Please fill in the application form. — Vui lòng điền vào mẫu đơn.

eat out; drop out (of); get out of; leave something out; cross something out

eat out = ăn ở nhà hàng, không ăn ở nhà: There wasn’t anything to eat at home, so we decided to eat out. drop out of college / university / a course / a race = bỏ ngang trước khi hoàn thành: Gary went to university but dropped out after a year. get out of something = tìm cách không phải làm điều đã hẹn: I promised I’d go to the wedding. I don’t want to go, but I can’t get out of it now. leave something out = bỏ sót, không đưa vào: In the sentence ‘She said that she was ill’, you can leave out the word ‘that’. cross something out = gạch một đường qua: Some of the names on the list had been crossed out.

• We decided to eat out. — Chúng tôi quyết định đi ăn ngoài.
• Gary dropped out after a year. — Gary bỏ học sau một năm.
• Some of the names had been crossed out. — Một số cái tên đã bị gạch đi.

Lưu ý

• Mẹo: in / out đứng một mình; sau danh từ thì dùng into / out of. Với đại từ: plug it in, fill it in, cross it out.
