Phần này gom những động từ đi với about, for, of, after. about: talk / read / know about, have a discussion about (nhưng discuss không có giới từ), do something about. for: ask (somebody) for, apply for, wait for, search for, leave (a place) for another place. take care of (= trông nom, lo liệu), care for somebody (= chăm sóc; hoặc I don’t care for = không thích), care about (= quan tâm). look for (= tìm) ⇄ look after (= chăm sóc).
talk / read / know ABOUT; have a discussion ABOUT; discuss (không giới từ); do something ABOUT
We talked about a lot of things at the meeting. We had a discussion about what we should do. Nhưng we discussed what we should do (không nói discussed about). do something / nothing about something = làm gì đó để cải thiện tình hình: If you’re worried about the problem, you should do something about it.
- We discussed what we should do. (not discussed about) — Chúng tôi đã thảo luận xem nên làm gì.
- If you’re worried, you should do something about it. — Nếu bạn lo lắng, bạn nên làm gì đó về chuyện này.
ask (somebody) FOR; ask somebody the way / the time; apply FOR a job; wait FOR; search FOR; leave FOR
I sent an email asking them for more information about the job. Nhưng I asked somebody the way to the station (không giới từ). I think you could do this job. Why don’t you apply for it? Don’t wait for me. I’m waiting for the rain to stop. I’ve searched the house for my keys. I haven’t seen her since she left (home) for work (không nói left to work).
- Why don’t you apply for it? — Sao bạn không nộp đơn vào vị trí đó?
- I’ve searched the house for my keys. — Tôi đã lục khắp nhà để tìm chìa khoá.
take care OF ⇄ care FOR ⇄ care ABOUT
take care of = trông nom, lo liệu: Don’t worry about me. I can take care of myself. I’ll take care of the travel arrangements. care for somebody = chăm sóc: Alan is 85 and lives alone. He needs somebody to care for him. I don’t care for hot weather (= tôi không thích). care about = coi là quan trọng: He’s very selfish. He doesn’t care about other people. Với what / where / how không có about: You can do what you like. I don’t care what you do.
- I can take care of myself. — Tôi tự lo cho mình được.
- He doesn’t care about other people. — Anh ta không quan tâm đến người khác.
look FOR ⇄ look AFTER
look for = tìm: I’ve lost my keys. Can you help me to look for them? look after = chăm sóc, giữ gìn: Alan is 85 and lives alone. He needs somebody to look after him (không nói look for). You can borrow this book, but please look after it.
- Can you help me to look for them? — Bạn giúp tôi tìm chúng nhé?
- He needs somebody to look after him. — Ông ấy cần người chăm sóc ông.
