Động từ + giới từ · Phần 1: to và at (Verb + preposition (1))
Phần này nói về những động từ đi với to, at, và những động từ KHÔNG có giới từ dù tiếng Việt nghĩ là có. to: talk / speak to somebody, listen to, apologise to somebody (for), explain something to somebody (không nói explain me), explain / describe (to somebody) what / how / why. Không có to: phone / call / email / text somebody (nhưng write to), answer somebody / something (nhưng reply to), ask somebody, thank somebody. at: look / stare / glance at, laugh at, aim / point at, shoot / fire at. Một số động từ đổi nghĩa khi đi với at hoặc to: shout at (giận dữ) ⇄ shout to (để họ nghe thấy); throw at (để trúng) ⇄ throw to (để họ bắt).
talk / speak TO; listen TO; apologise TO somebody (for …)
Who were you talking to? (talk / speak with cũng được). When I’m driving, I like to listen to the radio (không nói listen the radio). They apologised to me for their mistake (không nói apologised me).

explain something TO somebody; explain / describe (to somebody) what / how / why
Can you explain this word to me? (không nói explain me this word). I explained to them why I was worried (không nói I explained them). Let me describe to you what I saw (không nói Let me describe you).

phone / call / email / text somebody (không to); write TO; answer somebody; reply TO; ask somebody; thank somebody
I called the airline to cancel my flight (không nói called to the airline). Nhưng we say write (a letter) to somebody. You didn’t answer my email (không nói answer to my email) — nhưng reply to an email / a letter. If there’s anything you want to know, you can ask me (không nói ask to me). He thanked me for helping him (không nói thanked to me).
- I called the airline to cancel my flight. — Tôi gọi cho hãng bay để huỷ chuyến.
- You didn’t answer my email. — Bạn không trả lời email của tôi.
look / stare / glance AT; laugh AT; aim / point AT; shoot / fire AT
Why are you looking at me like that? I look stupid with this haircut. Everybody will laugh at me. Don’t point that knife at me. It’s dangerous. We saw someone with a gun shooting at birds, but he didn’t hit any.

shout AT ⇄ shout TO; throw AT ⇄ throw TO
shout at somebody khi bạn tức giận: He got very angry and started shouting at me. shout to somebody để họ nghe thấy: He shouted to me from the other side of the street. throw something at somebody / something (để trúng): Somebody threw an egg at the politician. throw something to somebody (để họ bắt): Lisa shouted ‘Catch!’ and threw the keys to me from the window.
