Ngoài cách tạo so sánh hơn cơ bản, còn có bốn mẫu hay gặp. (1) much / a lot / far / a bit / a little / slightly + so sánh hơn để nói chênh nhiều hay ít (much better, a bit more slowly). (2) any / no + so sánh hơn (not waiting any longer, no bigger than ours). (3) lặp lại so sánh hơn để nói điều gì thay đổi liên tục (better and better, more and more tourists). (4) the + so sánh hơn, the + so sánh hơn = càng … càng … (the sooner the better). Cuối cùng, older (mọi trường hợp) ⇄ elder (chỉ người trong gia đình, trước danh từ).

much / a lot / far / a bit / a little / slightly + so sánh hơn

Trước so sánh hơn ta có thể thêm từ chỉ mức chênh lệch: much, a lot, far (= a lot) cho chênh nhiều; a bit, a little, slightly (= a little) cho chênh ít. I felt ill earlier, but I feel much better now. Don’t go by train. It’s a lot more expensive. Could you speak a bit more slowly? This bag is slightly heavier than the other one. The problem is far more serious than we thought at first.

any / no + so sánh hơn: any longer, no bigger

any và no có thể đứng trước so sánh hơn: I’ve waited long enough. I’m not waiting any longer (= không đợi thêm chút nào nữa). We expected their apartment to be very big, but it’s no bigger than ours (hoặc it isn’t any bigger than ours). How do you feel now? Do you feel any better? This hotel is better than the other one, and it’s no more expensive.

I’ve waited long enough. I’m not waiting any longer. — Tôi đợi đủ lâu rồi. Tôi sẽ không đợi thêm nữa.

better and better, more and more: thay đổi liên tục

Lặp lại so sánh hơn (…er and …er, more and more …) để nói điều gì đó thay đổi liên tục: Your English is improving. It’s getting better and better. The city has grown fast in recent years. It’s got bigger and bigger. As I listened to his story, I became more and more convinced that he was lying. More and more tourists are visiting this part of the country.

the … the …: the sooner the better; càng … càng …

the + so sánh hơn, the + so sánh hơn nghĩa là “càng … càng …”. Cách rút gọn: The sooner the better (= càng sớm càng tốt), the bigger the better, the less luggage the better. Cũng dùng khi điều này phụ thuộc điều kia: The sooner we leave, the earlier we’ll arrive. The younger you are, the easier it is to learn. The more expensive the hotel, the better the service. The more I thought about the plan, the less I liked it.

‘What time shall we leave?’ ‘The sooner the better.’ — ‘Mình đi lúc mấy giờ?’ ‘Càng sớm càng tốt.’

older ⇄ elder

So sánh hơn của old là older: David looks older than he really is (không nói elder). elder chỉ dùng khi nói về người trong gia đình, đứng trước danh từ: my elder sister, their elder son (cũng nói được older). Không nói “somebody is elder”: My sister is older than me.

My elder sister is a TV producer. (or My older sister) — Chị gái tôi là nhà sản xuất truyền hình.
My sister is older than me. (not elder than me) — Chị gái tôi lớn tuổi hơn tôi.

Lưu ý

Không nói “very better” hay “very more expensive”: trước so sánh hơn dùng much / a lot / far (không dùng very).
