unless, as long as, in case… (Alternatives to if)
Ngoài if, tiếng Anh còn nhiều từ nối điều kiện, mỗi từ mang một sắc thái riêng: unless (trừ khi), as long as / provided that (miễn là), in case (phòng khi), even if (kể cả khi), otherwise (nếu không thì). Thì của động từ đi kèm vẫn theo cùng luật với câu điều kiện.

if hay in case?

if nghĩa là làm việc đó KHI điều kiện xảy ra; còn in case nghĩa là làm việc đó TRƯỚC, để phòng điều có thể xảy ra.
unless
unless đã mang sẵn nghĩa phủ định, nên bạn không thêm not nữa.
- Unless you practise, you won’t improve. — Nếu không luyện tập thì bạn sẽ không tiến bộ.
as long as / provided that
as long as / provided that dùng để đặt ra một điều kiện bắt buộc.
- You can stay as long as you’re quiet. — Bạn ở lại được, miễn là giữ yên lặng.
in case
in case dùng để đề phòng; khi nói về tương lai, theo sau nó là hiện tại đơn.
- Write it down in case you forget. — Ghi lại đi, phòng khi bạn quên.
unless = except if: trừ khi
The club is for members only. You can’t go in unless you are a member (= bạn chỉ vào được nếu là thành viên). I’ll see you tomorrow unless I have to work late. There are no buses to the beach. Unless you have a car, it’s difficult to get there. ‘Shall I tell Lisa what happened?’ ‘Not unless she asks you.’ Thay unless bằng if … not cũng được: Unless we leave now, we’ll be late = If we don’t leave now, we’ll be late.
- You can’t go in unless you are a member. — Bạn không vào được trừ khi bạn là thành viên.
- Unless we leave now, we’ll be late. — Nếu chúng ta không đi ngay bây giờ thì sẽ muộn.
as long as / so long as / provided (that) / providing (that) = với điều kiện là
Dùng as long as hoặc so long as (= if, on condition that): You can borrow my car as long as you promise not to drive too fast (đó là một điều kiện). Cũng nói provided (that) hoặc providing (that): Travelling by car is convenient provided (that) you have somewhere to park. Providing (that) the room is clean, I don’t mind which hotel we stay at (phòng phải sạch, còn lại thì tôi không quan tâm).
- You can borrow my car as long as you promise not to drive too fast. — Bạn có thể mượn xe của tôi miễn là bạn hứa không lái quá nhanh.
- Providing (that) the room is clean, I don’t mind which hotel we stay at. — Miễn là phòng sạch, tôi không ngại ở khách sạn nào.
Tương lai: không dùng will sau unless / as long as / provided / providing
Khi nói về tương lai, sau unless / as long as / so long as / provided / providing dùng thì hiện tại: I’m not going out unless it stops raining (không nói unless it will stop). Providing the weather is good, we’re going to have a picnic tomorrow (không nói providing the weather will be good).
- I’m not going out unless it stops raining. — Tôi sẽ không ra ngoài trừ khi trời tạnh mưa.
- Providing the weather is good, we’re going to have a picnic tomorrow. — Miễn là thời tiết đẹp, ngày mai chúng ta sẽ đi dã ngoại.
Lưu ý
- Không nói “unless you don’t…”, vì bản thân unless đã có nghĩa phủ định.
- Sau in case không dùng will: nói “in case it rains”, không phải “in case it will rain”.
